La baleine
Rebranding design concept for French sea salt brand
[En] La Baleine, which means a whale in French, is a major sea salt brand by Salins, a sea salt company based in Paris. Personally, after starting living in France, the first brand I remembered at the supermarket was La baleine. One day in summer, I visited their factory at Aigues-Mortes, a commune in the Gard department in the Occitanie region of southern France, just for sightseeing. When I entered the museum besides the salt pans, I was pulled in the display of their brand history. Then, I started to explore this rebranding concept.
[Fr] La Baleine est une marque du sel très célébrée depuis 1934. Personnellement, après d'avoir commencé à habiter en France, c'était la premiere marque de la France que j'ai connu. Un jour de l'été, j'ai visité leur usine à Aigues-Mortes pour tourisme. Quand je suis entré dans la musée à côte du salins, j'ai trouvé que leur ancienne logo et packages étaient vraiment charmants ! Donc j'ai commencé ce relook projet. C'est parti !

What I was thinking after looking at their brand history, especially the logo history showing below, was ...
"Why they stopped simplifying the whale?"
The concept of the logo
[En] I simplified the silhouette of the whale in 70's and 80's logos, because they were cute! And I found that the silhouette of the whale closes to the shape of rotated "b" , so I put the whale in the words. Perhaps, the readability would be the problem, especially when it's written horizontally. However, once it was written vertically in French style ( from bottom to top ), the problem disappeared and the whale started to swim on the packages.
[Fr] J'ai simplifié la silhouette de la baleine dans des logos des année 70 et 80, parce que ils était mignons ! Ensuite j'ai trouvé que la silhouette de la baleine ressemblait une forme de "b" allongé, donc j'ai mit la baleine dans le texte. Peut-être, la lisibilité serait une problème surtout quand c'est écrit horizontalement mais dès que c'est écrit verticalement, le problème aura disparu et la baleine commencerait à nager dans les boîtes !
The French color and wave
[En] From the old packages, I found the blue and red waves on white background, which might had represented "the sky, the sea, the salt pan at Aigues-Mortes, the salt", and also France. Therefore, I made the package designs like they are representative of France.
[Fr] J'ai trouvé des vagues blue et rouge sur blanc dans les anciennes boîtes et je croirais qu'elles représentaient le ciel, la mer, le salins d'Aigues- Mortes, et du sel mais aussi la France ! Donc, j'ai crée les boîtes comme ils sont la représentation de la France.
The whale swimming in the "salt sea"
[En] Assumed to inform their changing to people, I made a simple but playful graphic. From this image, you can see why the whale and the sea part are white. Apparently it represents the salt!
[Fr] Pour announcer leur changement, j'ai crée une graphique simple mais chouette ! Dans ce image, vous pouvez trouver pourquoi la baleine et la mer sont blanches: c'est du sel !
[En] This project was started just by my personal curiosity, so that these designs are just in images. However, if one day this whale has its life and starts to swim in supermarkets and on your tables, it couldn't be happier!

[Fr] Ce projet était juste commencé par mon curiosité, donc ces designs sont juste dans les images. Mais, si un jour cette baleine a sa vie et commence à nager dans des magasins et aussi sur vos tables, ça me plairait bien ;-)
